Jake Weinstock breaks down Tulane's 7th practice on Thursday morning, from the New Orleans Saints indoor facility on Airline Drive.
Some notes from today's practice:
Kadin Semonza took the entirety of the 1st team reps during the 11-on-11 period and had the best day I've seen from him during the spring and fall practices I have had a chance to attend. Jake Retzlaff took the entirety of the 2nd team reps during the same period.
TJ Smith continues to make plays both on defense and in the kick return game. He is pushing Javion White hard for reps at "spear" (slot corner) and should be the kick returner for the Wave. He had a few touchdowns or near touchdowns in that period, today.
It seems clear to me that redshirt freshman Reese Baker is going to be a starter on the offensive line, but the question now becomes "where?" Throughout camp, he has dominated the reps at 1st team right tackle, with a healthy rotation of guys at right guard, led by Landry Cannon and John Bock. But with redshirt sophomore Darion Reed having an excellent camp at 2nd team right tackle, there was a new wrinkle, today; Reed at right tackle and Reese Baker at right guard with the 1's. That will be interesting to monitor as August progresses.
There is definitely a chippiness and willingness to mix it up that exists with each of Sullivan, Retzlaff and Semonza that is not something I can remember seeing from Tulane quarterbacks during my time. The competitive juices flow during full contact periods, with this 2025 team, and I'll just leave it at that.
