WHO'S OUT?
Two to the portal (2): Alex Bauman, Joshua Goines
Two to graduation/Retirement (2): Reggie Brown, Blake Gunter
After several productive seasons, and logging a combined 931 snaps from 2022-2024, Reggie Brown has exhausted his eligibility. Never a flashy player, Brown, the definition of a "glue guy" will be missed, as he was an adept run-blocker and was certainly enough of a threat in the passing game. Knee injuries slowed what otherwise could have and perhaps should have been a stellar senior season, in 2024. Blake Gunter will be remaining at Tulane University, but is hanging up his cleats after three seasons with the Green Wave, and we wish him well.
Alex Bauman, of course, is the headliner, here. Bauman, then a true freshman, was known to few heading into the 2023 Cotton Bowl against Southern Cal. He had caught 7 of 12 targets on the season, heading into that matchup, after playing just a hair over 200 snaps. He then made the biggest catch in Tulane history, hauling in a six-yard touchdown from Michael Pratt with 0:09 remaining, to tie the game at 45-45, before Valentino Ambrosio's extra point gave the Green Wave a 46-45 lead, that stood up, once the clock hit all zeroes. Bauman followed that 2022 campaign with a strong season in 2023, catching 35 of 47 targets for 285 yards and 5 touchdowns. In 2024, however, he was likewise hobbled with a knee injury that caused him to miss the Rice game and limited him quite a bit, throughout the second half, most notably against North Texas and Navy. Bauman finished the season with just 20 receptions on 32 catches, but he did manage to post an impressive 7 touchdowns, and Tulane passers had a 121.4 quarterback rating when targeting him. Alex entered the portal and has moved on to play for the University of Miami.
Joshua Goines was a member of the last class to play for Willie Fritz, that of 2023. Goines chose Tulane over Darmouth and Columbia, and was rated a 3-star recruit by 247 sports, in that class of 2024. He flashed several times in spring practices, in 2024, but was unable to translate that into playing time, last fall, posting just 50 snaps on offense, over the course of the season. He did not receive a target. Josh entered the winter portal and on January 22, found his new home, committing to Prairie View A&M.
As far as returners go, both Anthony Miller and Guiseann Mirtil are back. Mirtil did not see a snap, during his redshirt season in 2024, while Miller played 292. He was particularly called upon during the absences of Brown and/or Bauman, posting 38 snaps against Rice, 29 against Charlotte, 35 against Temple, and 37 against Army. Additionally, sources confirm that former quarterback Ty Thompson is expected to work as a tight end, this spring. This position group was described to me by someone inside the building as "the most wide open competition on the roster." Joining these veterans are two members of the high school class of 2025, Gabe Lovorn, from Medina, Tennessee and Cameron Roberts, from Opa-Locka, Florida.
WHO'S IN?
Needing to add to the tight end group, obviously, Tulane acquired Leron Husbands, a physically mature 5th year player, who spent 2021-2024 at Maryland. He has two years of eligibility remaining, however, and is simply looking for an opportunity to play, after being a backup at a B1G program for several years, while battling injuries during his time in College Park, Maryland. He is 6'3", 246 pounds (physically mature, as I said) and could find a nice fit in Joe Craddock's offense, after playing 94 snaps for the Terrapins in 2024, a career high. When he signed with Maryland in 2021, he did so after receiving West Virginia, NC State, Boston College, Purdue, Liberty, Indiana, Pitt, Rutgers, and others.
In January, Tulane secured a commitment from Justyn Reid, who played 414 snaps for Southern Miss in 2024, under then-head coach Will Hall, now a Tulane assistant. Reid made 10 starts for the Golden Eagles, but saw just 14 targets, as tight ends were not primarily featured in USM's passing game, which was itself, not the focus of the offense, by any stretch of the imagination. Reid developed into an excellent pass blocker in 2024, as he posted 4 of his 5 highest such grades by PFF over Southern Miss' final 5 games of the season. He could provide nice value in that regard, among others, as Tulane seeks to protect a new quarterback in 2025. At 6'5", 255 pounds, and coming off of 10 starts, he too should be ready to step in immediately and play, if called upon. When Reid selected Southern Miss in 2023, he did so over offers from, most notably, Georgia Tech.
Be on the lookout for Part 5 in our series, the offensive line, later this week. Roll Wave!
